Chris Whyman - Kingston's Town Crier

Chris was born in Kingston, to Grace and Ernest Whyman in 1961, in fact, you could say he began his crying career at Hotel Dieu Hospital and was already making headlines. His parents were very much involved in either music or the theatre and this influenced Chris to take up the hobby of musical theatre. At the young age of 11 he landed his first role and has gone on to perform in over 50 various productions. The longest “role” has been that of the Town Crier for the City of Kingston.

Chris began this historic art of “Town Crying” in June of 1984 and has gone on to represent the City of Kingston with honour and pride on all occasions since that time. He has proclaimed for Heads of State, Royalty and many distinguished visitors as well as citizens and tourists alike. He has performed on several hundred occasions for almost every charitable or fund-raising event organized, in an effort to help them achieve the greatest community awareness of their efforts and to add an air of official stature/pomp and ceremony. Town Crying has given him the opportunity to speak to many children at area schools about the art of Town Crying and its place in history. He has been called on to lend his writing knowledge to creative writing students and even helping young students with Town Crier type characters in school productions.

His promotional duties have seen him visit Australia, Belgium, England, Ireland, across Canada and the US crying the praises of Kingston “The Limestone Gem”. His attendance at competitions have brought forth numerous and repeat titles from Provincial Champion, North American Champion to International Champion bringing the name of Kingston into the spotlight. In 2004 Chris won the “The Lord Mayor of Chester’s World Town Crier Tournament crowning him Champion and in 2010 he repeated this feat again in Chester making him a two time World Champion! In 2013 Chris will co-host the next World Invitational Town Criers Championship in Kingston and Ottawa. The first time a world championship has been held in two “Capital “cities.

He hosted the Learning Channels production on Travel , and has taken part in TV productions by international media visiting Kingston from Australia, Japan, Korea , Ireland, China and Germany, just to name a few. His photo in full regalia dons many of Kingston tourist brochures, videos and magazines. His Crying career has lead him to become full time Manager of Visitor Services for Tourism Kingston, where he can combine his crying talents and promotional abilities, to the service of Citizens and visitors alike.

Chris is a single father of two fantastic boys, Curtis and Patrick, who have on occasion when they were younger dressed as junior Town Criers, helping their father at competitions and local events! He continues to promote with pride this great community and the people within it and the many organizations and volunteers without which this City would not function. His only regret, he can’t retire..... There’s no pension!
